Bethesda Game Studios has revealed the official title of its long-awaited RPG, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The announcement came as part of a video celebrating the studio’s 40th anniversary, with director Todd Howard introducing the reveal near the end.

The short teaser features the game’s title and logo, offering fans their first new information about the project in years. While Bethesda has not confirmed the setting outright, the imagery strongly points toward Hammerfell, a region known for its desert landscapes and Redguard population.

The Elder Scrolls VI Could Take Players to Hammerfell

The teaser shows a scroll emerging from the sand, followed by a passage attributed to Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell. The passage is dated 4E 206.

The previous mainline game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, takes place in 4E 201. If the date in the teaser reflects the game’s timeline, Sentinel could be set five years after the events of Skyrim. However, it is also possible that 4E 206 refers only to when the scroll was written, with its discovery taking place much later.

Hammerfell is the homeland of the Redguards and has appeared in several games across the franchise, including The Elder Scrolls Online and The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard.

The region could also provide a politically turbulent backdrop for the story. In Skyrim, Hammerfell was rumored to be moving away from the Empire of Tamriel while opposing the Aldmeri Dominion. That history could point toward civil conflict and political unrest in Sentinel, although Bethesda has not confirmed the story details.

The city of Sentinel itself may play an important role in the game, particularly if the title reflects the central location of the story.

Bethesda Has Not Announced a Release Date

Despite revealing the title, Bethesda has not shared a release date, gameplay footage, platform information or additional details about the game.

The studio has said development is continuing, with more information expected at a later date.

The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced in June 2018 through a brief teaser confirming that the game was in development. Since then, fans have waited for a more substantial update.

The latest announcement also comes after changes at Xbox under Asha Sharma, with the company reportedly placing renewed focus on major franchises such as The Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Bethesda Looks Beyond Grand Theft Auto VI

The title reveal arrives as the gaming industry prepares for the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar’s upcoming game is expected to dominate gaming discussions around its release, making it difficult for other major titles to attract the same level of attention.

Bethesda’s announcement may help remind players that there are other major RPGs on the horizon. Even without a release date or gameplay footage, confirming the name gives fans something concrete to discuss and keeps the franchise in the spotlight.

The Elder Scrolls and Grand Theft Auto are among gaming’s biggest franchises, and both have faced lengthy development cycles between major releases. Rockstar may reach its launch milestone first, but Bethesda is signalling that its own flagship series remains an important part of the gaming landscape.

There is still much that players do not know about Sentinel. For now, the title and the apparent Hammerfell setting are the main clues Bethesda has offered.

A Long-Awaited Update for The Elder Scrolls Fans

The title was revealed in Bethesda’s 40th-anniversary video, narrated by Todd Howard. The video looks back at the studio’s history, with Howard standing beside a life-sized Mr Handy robot as he highlights moments from Bethesda’s past.

Near the end, Howard turns toward the future and acknowledges that fans have been asking about The Elder Scrolls. He then explains that the anniversary was the right moment to reveal what the sixth game is called.

After years of waiting since the original 2018 announcement, fans finally have a title: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel.

The setting, release date, gameplay and platforms remain unconfirmed. But the reveal gives the next chapter of the series renewed visibility—and a reminder that there will be plenty to look forward to after Grand Theft Auto VI.
